In the name of Allāh,
the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Peace and Blessings of Allāh on Mohammad.
Allāh–the Glorious and the High,
Lord of the worlds
Mohammad–who brought the world
to our feet and eternity to our arms.

The atheist’s defense against Islam is wholly about showing non-existent faults with Islam, rather than prove the “truth” about the non-existence of God. And the atheist can deny the existence of God; the atheist cannot disprove the existence of God. And Allāh has proven His existence through the Qur’an (see Qur’an-prophecies; Qur’an-science).
Needless to say, the atheist’s charges against Islam are mostly the usual old worn-out material tossed out by other critics and which we have already refuted on our site.

And whereas the atheist tries to show that religions have engaged in wars and other crimes to further ideology, he seems to have forgotten or not care or conveniently omitted that atheists –Russia and China– have also engaged in wars, pogroms (and in the case of China even against its own people), killing tens of millions (both military and civilians) to advance their purpose. (Check the Internet).
And Russia is still coloring Chechnya a glossy red –obliterating, not too long ago, half-a-million people in Groznyy– and China is steam-rolling full speed to dilute the Muslim majority in “Uighuristan” to satisfy their respective parasitic appetites.

However, that Islam engaged in wars to advance its theology or because Islam is “warlike”, is gross canard. As clearly stated in the Qur’an, Mohammad’s duty was only to deliver the Divine Message: one was free to accept or reject. Had the disbelievers left Mohammad to his preaching and not force him into self-defecse these disbelievers would not have lost their heads and their wealth.

The following are the individual’s charges (noted in “brown”) and our “answer.”

1.Muslims worship the black stone at the Ka’bah.
ANSWER: See Black Stone at Ka’bah is paganism

2 Atheists killed by Muslims for not believing in Allāh.
Prophet Mohammad’s duty was only to deliver the Divine Message not to enforce it–(Qur’an 2:272; 3:20; 5:95, 102; 10:99; 13:40; 16:82; 24:54; 29:18; 46:35; 64:12). A person has the right to not believe in Allāh–(Qur’an 2:256; 6:105-109; 9:6; 10:99-100; 17:7; 18:6, 29; 42:15; 50:45; 76:2-3; 109:1-6).
Muslims who killed atheists for not believing in Allāh were not following the Qur’an.

3. Qur’an says to slaughter the enemy; and is misogynistic.
Only those enemies are to be “slaughtered” who first take up arms against Muslims: “Permission (to fight) is given to those on whom war is made, because they are oppressed”–(Qur’an 22:39).
And this fighting is to be of a non-aggressive nature: “And fight in the way of Allāh against those who fight against you but be not aggressive. Surely Allāh loves not the aggressors”–(Qur’an 2:190. That Allāh says to kill unbelievers wherever you find them which critics relish to quote see Qur’an-evil verses).

Mohammad, at his triumph at Makkah, forgave those who, for twenty grueling years persecuted, besieged, tried to assassinate, forced him into exile, pursued and warred against him in their determination to extirpate him. And the world, past and present, is yet to equal Mohammad’s magnanimity.

It is doubtful Mohammad would have forgiven these sordid enemies if the Qur’an says to indiscriminately “slaughter the enemy.”

That Mohammad held no rancor against the disbelievers and only sought an end to their injustice is evidenced from the fact that Mohammad prayed for his dead enemy, saying: “if I knew that if I asked forgiveness for him more than seventy times, he would be forgiven, I would ask it for more times than that”–(Qur’an 9:84, 113. Bokhari Vol. 6, #193, 194). Such was the magnanimity of this wonderful man, Mohammad.

That Islam is misogynistic. Allāh says:

  • -He created man from a single soul and made woman from the same–(4:1; 7:189, this verse establishes that from the beginning women have equality with men). Man and woman being created from the same essence, both have the same faculties and potentials. If one develops himself/ herself and the other does not, then either may be superior to the other.
  • -He has put love and compassion between them–(30:21);
  • -women are to be honored–(4:1);
  • -men and women are garments to the other (to protect, comfort, beautify, and to cover each other’s faults)–(2:187);
  • -women have rights similar to those against her–(2:228);
  • -woman has rights to inheritance, and full control over her earnings–(4:7, 11, 177; 4:32);
  • -women have moral and spiritual equality with men–(3:194, 197; 24:30, 31, 55; 33:35; 49:13; 57:12, 18, 19);
  • -that women and men are protectors of one another–(9:71).

Woman is so highly enthroned in Islam that the Prophet Mohammad tells us that Paradise lies at the feet of mothers.  Allāh has listed honor to parents, especially to mothers, after worship of Him–(Qur’an 6:152; 17:23; 31:14).

It is a betrayal of ignorance to charge that the Qur’an is misogynistic. (For more on women, including that woman’s witness and her inheritance is half of a man’s see Islam-women).

Significantly, apart from the fact that woman has rights with man. Whereas the critics of Islam charge that Islam discriminates against women; Islam requires that:
-men give a gift to their brides even though she may be wealthier than he is
-men maintain their wives even though she may have a mountain of money
-men be circumcised and women not
-men shave their heads at the Hajj and women not.
Yet no critic of Islam has charged that Islam discriminates against men; or that Islam teaches hatred of men; or that Islam favors women over men; or that these are symbols of men’s subservience to women.

Notably, whereas Allāh reveals in His Qur’an 2:228 that women have rights similar to those against her He did not say that men have rights similar as those against him; thus, arguably, women would seem to have more rights on men than men have on women.

Allah is a Just God.  He will not discriminate against Woman because of her form and physiology –a form and physiology of which she had no choice; a form and physiology He gave her.

In fact, if form and physiology is the measure of superiority, Woman is superior to Man –she having carried man, gave birth to him and nursed him. Three degrees of excellence and superiority that Man have yet to acquire.

Women even have a fourth degree of excellence over men–cloning! Whereas the male sperm can be dispensed with in duplicating the being, the female’s ovum is necessary to develop the clone.

4. Mohammad committed murder and torture and plundered.
The Qur’an allows fighting a defensive war against transgressors and without being aggressive, and to stop fighting when the transgressors seek peace:

“Permission (to fight) is given to those on whom war is made, because they are oppressed,”
“And fight in the way of Allāh against those who fight against you but be not aggressive. Surely Allāh loves not the aggressors,”
“So if they withdraw from you and fight you not and offer you peace, then Allāh allows you no way against them”–(Qur’an 22:39; 2:190; 4:90).

Mohammad, who was no transgressor, did not murder anyone –killing the transgressors who are dedicated to killing you before they kill you is not murder; it is self-defense. If you believe killing the transgressor before he kills you is “murder” go tell it to the Allies of World War II and to the Canadians over their 1812 War against American transgression.

That Mohammad tortured. From the beginning of Mohammad’s ministry there was tacit warfare by his opponents. By intriguing against his life and openly reviling the Prophet these opponents identified themselves as “enemy combatants” and were subjected to reprisals –even today and in “civilized” society during times of tension “free speech,” which may even express the truth, may be viewed as an incitement to unrest against the State, and be subjected to reprisals. People are targeted for opposing authority. People who are mere suspects are routed and even tortured or killed.
Unlike rogue leaders, the Prophet Mohammad was no tyrant, no occupier, no oppressor, and no exploiter. Had the enemies of Mohammad not become physical, Mohammad would not have retaliated.

Whatever measures Mohammad took to secure the welfare of himself and followers, and on his own soil, Mohammad was fully justified. The critics of Mohammad would do the same and even more for less than self-defense. The Bible and Twentieth-century records are evidence to this!

(It is to be known that a large number of these “killings” that the Prophet Mohammad is said to have ordered was quoted from Ibn Hisham, also known as Ibn Ishaq. It is said of Ibn Ishaq that:
“Throughout his work, Ibn Ishaq precedes every statement with the word za`ama or za`amu, he (they) alleged). It carries with it more than a hint that the statement may not be true, though it might be sound. This attitude reflects Ibn Ishaq’s caution and fairness.”1
Thus, it is evident that such “killings” may be doubtful. Nevertheless even if the Prophet Mohammad ordered such “killings” they, as shown, are hardly a blot on the Prophet’s character).

That Mohammad plundered: For twenty torturous years Mohammad was persecuted, besieged, subject of assassination attempt, forced into exile, pursued and warred against.

The Muslims who migrated with Mohammad to Madinah were forced to leave behind their property and wealth. Why should they not recoup from the Makkans what they had been forced to abandon?  If you were to meet the person who forced you out of your home in a vulnerable position wouldn’t you confront him? Why then fault Mohammad for a legal act that you would commit? Be it Seventh century Arabia or Twentieth century era, the occupier/usurper is not to be left untouched to devour the fruits of his victims in peace.
However, that Mohammad’s purpose was to make war, and to acquire booty is a myth (see Mohammad-rapist, pedophile, looter, cripple).

5. While performing his five daily prayers a Muslim exercises his memory but not his intelligence.
Intelligence is intrinsic in the Muslim’s prayers. In our prayers (and belief) Muslims are demonstrating the highest form of intelligence: that Allāh God is the only Power greater than us and the only Power worthy of adoration and worship.

6. Qur’an contains contradictory texts; and abrogated verses.
Contrary to some Muslims, there is no abrogation of verses in the Qur’an. And there are no “contradictory texts” in the Qur’an: only one’s lack of pondering on the verses (see Qur’an-abrogation & collecting).

7. Islam extols faith and belief –death and life in the Hereafter– neglects the physical –hates reason and intelligence, women and pleasure etc.
Allāh says He “has made subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth”–(Qur’an 31:20; 45:13);
-to partake of the good things: “O men, eat the lawful and good things from what is in the earth”–(Qur’an 2:168);
-and to seek the good of this life and in the Hereafter: “And there are some among them who say: Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the Fire”–(Qur’an 2:201).
How then does Islam neglects the physical?

Islam does not prohibit the acquiring of riches, only that it is not to be hoarded.

That Islam hates reason and intelligence. I only need enter one verse to obliterate this charge; Allāh says in Qur’an 16:125: “Call to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the best manner. Surely thy Lord knows best him who strays from His path, and He knows best those who go aright.”
And for certain, whether it be a secular or theological matter, one cannot apply wisdom and argue in the best manner without having “reason and intelligence.”

That Islam hates women and pleasure. Allāh tell us:

  • -He created man from a single soul and made woman from the same–(4:1; 7:189, this verse establishes that from the beginning women have equality with men). Man and woman being created from the same essence, both have the same faculties and potentials. If one develops himself/ herself and the other does not, then either may be superior to the other.
  • -He has put love and compassion between them–(30:21);
  • -that women are to be honored–(4:1);
  • -that men and women are garments to the other (to protect, comfort, beautify, and to cover each other’s faults)–(2:187);
  • -women have rights similar to those against her–(2:228);
  • -woman has rights to inheritance, and full control over her earnings–(4:7, 11, 177; 4:32);
  • -women have moral and spiritual equality with men–(3:194, 197; 24:30, 31, 55; 33:35; 49:13; 57:12, 18, 19);
  • -that women and men are protectors of one another–(9:71).
  • -that He “has created man from water, then He has made for him blood-relationship and marriage-relationship;”-(Qur’an 25:54) and marriage relationship includes sexual pleasure.

Woman is so highly enthroned in Islam that the Prophet Mohammad tells us that Paradise lies at the feet of mothers.  Allāh has listed honor to parents, especially to mothers, after worship of Him–(Qur’an 6:152; 17:23; 31:14).
How then does Islam hates women and pleasure?

8. Muslims forbidden to eat pork.
Though under compulsion one is allowed to eat it–(Qur’an 6:146). It is now known that trichinosis is a parasite passed onto man through pigs (and “wild bears, wild pigs or walruses”).

9 Muslims/Islam demands we think of God in all waking moments.
This is a blessing in that we are to conduct ourselves in truth and justice at all times:
-O you who believe, be maintainers of justice, bearers of witness for Allah, even though it be against your own selves or (your) parents or near relatives –whether he be rich or poor, Allah has a better right over them both.  So follow not (your) low desires, lest you deviate. And if you distort or turn away from (truth), surely Allah is ever Aware of what you do”–(Qur’an 4:135).
-“O you who believe, be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice; and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably. Be just; that is nearer to observance of duty. And keep your duty to Allāh Surely Allāh is Aware of what you do”–(Qur’an 5:8).

10. Hadith details anal cleansing; no urination facing Makkah; preparation for prayer –clothes and body to be free of bodily matter– no sex during menstruation and no anal sex. All devoid of “rational, reasonable connection.”
(Even beautiful teachings on personal hygiene do not escape the critic’s wrath).
Islam is the total way of life. It gives guidance for our personal, moral, social, intellectual and spiritual benefit/upliftment. Cleanliness is next Godliness. (Do you not strive to be clean at all times possible?)

We do not face Makkah while easing the bowel and bladder because we face Makkah to engage in worship of Allāh God.

Garments are to be clean and free of impure matter and sweet scented (if possible) because we are standing in the presence of Allāh God and speaking to Him. (Do you go with soiled clothes and smelly to engage in social intercourse with your friends or in the presence of people you deem important?)

We do not have sex during menstruation because the flow is impure and that time can be painful for the woman. (Do you like to dabble in impure matter? or force yourself when your wife is in pain?)

Allāh gave man and woman the function of sex to propagate the species, anal sex does not propagate the species. (See Islam-homosexuals & lesbians).

11. Muslims’ waking and going to bed depends on the time of prayer –follows a rigid schedule.
Do you not wake up at a certain time in the morning to get to work (if you work) and hustle off to bed at night to have your sleep for the next day’s work?
Isn’t having a job and reaching and leaving on time and taking lunch when the buzzer sounds and return to work when the buzzer sound again (marking that lunch is over) “a rigid schedule”?
Seems every routine in life follows “a rigid schedule.”

12. Angels do not like garlic or shallot.
Due to its strong smell, the Prophet Mohammad avoided garlic because he conversed with Angel–(Bokhari Vol. 1, #814; Vol. 9, #458). Some humans also do not like garlic and onions.

13. Destroying copies of Qur’an.
See Qur’an. (Muhammad Ali has dealt at length with this subject in his preliminary notes to his translation of the Qur’an. MA’s translation can be viewed/downloaded at

14. Muslims exiled or killed etc; by Muslim authorities for thinking and writing freely.
Muslims who did this had no assent from Islam. Muhammad Ali notes in his comprehensive work The Religion Of Islam:

“Reasoning or the exercise of judgment, in theological as well as in legal matters, plays a very important part in the religion of Islam, and the value of reason is expressly recognized in the Qur’an, which is full of exhortations like the following: “Do you not reflect?”…. “Have you no sense?” “There are signs in this for a people who reflect;” “There are signs in this for a people who understand;” and so on. Those who do not use their reasoning faculty are compared to animals, and spoken of as being deaf, dumb and blind.” (Qur’an 2:171; 7:179; 8:22); 25:44). (See Islam-ijtihad (reason)

And in his The Early Caliphate:
“There was no restriction whatever on freedom of opinion or on the expression of that opinion. Governors were made accessible to the public to the extent that they were forbidden to have guards at their doors lest there should be the least hitch for the aggrieved to approach the highest authority at any time…The position of the Caliph himself, in this wonderful democracy, was no higher than that of a commoner. He was considered the servant of the people, not the king, and as such he was open to criticism…This unrestricted freedom, in itself the highest virtue, served in the hands of mischief- mongers as the most deadly weapon to undermine the power of Islam.” (See Islam & democracy).
Islam can withstand any attack and from any frontier. Rather than kill opponents Muslims are to learn Islam and invite opponents to substantiate their charges.

15. Islamic teachings on astronomy, mathematics, geography, philosophy, and the seeking of knowledge (going all the way even to China) are only for religious uses not for social progress.
(Wonder what lead the atheist to draw such a conclusion).
The first Divine revelation Allāh gave to the Prophet Mohammad was, “Read in the name of thy Lord who creates…Who taught by the pen, Taught man what he knew not” –(Qur’an 96:1-5);
Allāh also revealed: “I, Allāh, am the Seer. A Book which We have revealed to thee that thou mayest bring forth men, by their Lord’s permission, from darkness into light, to the way of the Mighty, the Praised One”–(Qur’an 14:1).

Thus, there are two kinds of knowledge: (i) material knowledge (taught by the pen), which if for our physical benefit and (ii) religious knowledge (taught from the Book/Qur’an) which is for our spiritual benefit.
Allāh also informs us that He “has made subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth”–(Qur’an 31:20; 45:13). One could not make subservient “whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth” without material knowledge.
How then is Islamic teaching only for religious uses and not for social progress?

Since the Qur’an is the best Divine Message and it also informs us about what He revealed to past prophets and that all mankind is to follow the Qur’an, what need do Muslims have to go to China for religious knowledge?
Islam is not only social progress, but also personal, moral, intellectual and spiritual progress.

It is even more intriguing that Allāh would reveal teachings on “astronomy, mathematics, geography,” for religious uses (and which would be perfected years into the future) when the Prophet Mohammad already established the criteria for determining the beginning of the months; and has set the times of prayers and the direction in which to face to pray; and when future generations can set their clocks by observing the rising and setting times of the sun and by the hue of night sky.

And considering that the Qur’an teaches “philosophy” –the pursuit of wisdom or “love of wisdom” in abstract matters such as existence, reason, mind, etc– for all aspects of life. (More on this later).

16. Whereas on earth Muslims avoid the illicit and the impure things, such things are allowed in paradise –wine (83:25; 47:15); pork (52:22); sing and wear gold (18:31); fondle houris (44:54); enjoy virgins (55:70); caress youths (56:17).
Is there no “alcohol free” wine on earth? The verse does say “pork”: it speaks of “flesh” (it is doubtful Allāh would provide prohibited food).
Muslims are not forbidden “gold” on earth. Only that we are encouraged to avoid glamorous items; indulging in luxuries tend to lead one away from righteousness (regardless of religion, pious people generally live simple lives).

Muslims are not forbidden to “sing” on earth. Allāh created everything for our benefit and gives us knowledge. We can utilize this knowledge for benefit or to harm. It all depends on what we sing and what such song/singing impels us to do: if it is vulgar or impels us to evil it is bad. If it reminds us of God and impels us to goodness, it is good.

  • -If the men “fondle” houris; wouldn’t houris also “fondle” the men? (For an explanation of houris see Muhammad Ali’s commentary to Qur’an 52:20. Or see Hurs-maidens or raisins?)
  • -if Muslim men “enjoy virgins” wouldn’t virgins enjoy the men? (Does your wife, if you have, not enjoy you when you enjoy her?)
  • -how did you come to the conclusion that Muslims will “caress” these youths? These youths are as the verse shows are servers/waiters (Qur’an 556:17; 76:19; 52:24). Do waiters and waitresses at a restaurant cater to the patrons loins or stomachs?

Significantly, Allah tells us “And no soul knows what delights of the eyes is kept hidden for them, as a reward for their (good) deeds”–(Qur’an 32:17).
And the Prophet Mohammad is reported to have said: “Allah says, I have prepared for My righteous servants that which  no eye has seen and no ear has heard, and which the heart of man cannot conceive–(Bokhari Vol. 4, # 467; Vol. 6:, # 302-303; Vol. 9, # 589).
Thus, seemingly the things in paradise and on earth the same only in name.

Man can relate to things only in the physical life. To us the ultimate in possess-ions are gold and precious stones, wealth and carnal pleasure. So Allah relates to us in terms of what we understand.

There is nothing scandalous about having pleasure in paradise. This–having peace and joy–seemingly, is the desire and goal of every religionist. However, heavenly bliss is not a pleasure of the body. Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din points out:

“The Muslim Paradise is not, it must be understood, a garden for the voluptuary, where he may sit in the company of maidens under the shade of trees, with goblets of wine circling continually for the enjoyment of the dissipated. We read, it is true, of Hur (Qur’an 44:54) in the Muslim Paradise…. But we are assured that these damsels of heaven will be possessed of a pure and spotless heart (Qur’an 56:22), which the very word Hur literally means. Their eyes, fascinating as they may be, will not be the bearers of amorous message……We shall all be free of physical appetites and there will be no further procreation of the species….It may be said that the Hurs are not wanted if they are not to play the role of wife as in our earthly sojourn. But those who say so only betray the hollowness of their own minds. Even in this life bed is not the best part of our happiness. All earthly tastes lose their attractions for us when we pass a certain age. Intellectual or spiritual pleasures alone can captivate us for good. Knowledge, and not the flesh, is our real pleasure.” (Much like a ballerina finds pleasure in his/her dancing, and a musician in his/her music). (Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din, Introduction to the Study of the Holy Qur’an, pp. 109, 110.

17. Adam’s wife, Eve, is not named in the Qur’an because the male came first and woman is a “leftover;” she is subordinated to her husband; was responsible for “original sin.”
Our answers in items #3 and #7 belie the atheist’s charge that in Islam woman is a “leftover.” In fact, as shown “woman” is more honored than man. In Islam there is no “original sin.”

Notably, Christians also try to use this non-mention of Eve’s name in the Qur’an to claim that the Bible is superior to the Qur’an as the Bible mentions the names of women, viz; Sarah, Tamarr, Rehab, Ruth and Esther.
However, in contrast to the Qur’an which shows that “Eve” (and Adam were both deceived by Satan and were forgiven by Allāh for eating of the forbidden tree) the Bible condemns Eve, and all women, to a life of labor pains and subjection to their husbands–(Genesis 3:16).

Significantly, it is NOT God who gave the name “Eve” to Adams’ wife; it was Adam who gave his wife this name: “And ADAM CALLED HIS WIFE’S NAME EVE because she was the mother of all living”–(Genesis 3:20).
Incidentally, Eve could not be the mother of “all living;” considering there were, at least, people living in Nod to whom Cain went and took a wife: (After killing his brother, Abel) “Cain went out of the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch”–(Genesis 4:16-17. For more on this see Christianity-man made to live forever).

18. Islam proclaims that man is superior to woman (4:34); the veil (24:30); no extra-marital relations for woman but man can (4:3); her chastity (17:32; 33:35); cannot marry non-Muslim (3:28); marriage mandatory (24:32; 4:25); submit to husbands whenever he likes (2:223);  beat wife on mere suspicion (4:34); inferior to man (2:228).
Islam does not say that “man is superior to woman,” only that man, because of him being the maintainer of the family has a degree of superiority over woman.
All governments and organizations have a “head.” Since every ship requires a captain, husbands, by virtue of them being the maintainers of their wives, are given a degree of superiority (in home affairs) over the wives: woman ahs equal rights with man–(Qur’an 2:228). (Though he has this degree of superiority, the wise husband would follow his wife’s judgment if it is superior to his). (See Woman and man not equal).

A man being with his wife is NOT “extra-marital” relations

  • -Muslim men are allowed more than one wife (see Islam-polygamy).
  • -her chastity. Man also is to guard his “chastity” “Go not near to fornication: surely it is an obscenity” (is for both men and women)(17:32). Qur’an 33:35 also refers to both men and women: “Surely the men who submit and the women who submit…..and the men who guard their chastity and the women who guard”
  • -cannot marry non-Muslim (see Women marrying non-Muslim men)
  • -marriage mandatory: Man and woman have carnal needs that can be met with either in the bed of marriage or in the cot of concubinage or in the bin of illicit relations. To prevent the moral decay of society Islam recommends that males and females of marriageable status get married. Illicit relations can also result in unwanted pregnancies and abandoned children which is a gross injustice to the child.

19. Circumcision:
ANSWER: See Circumcision and controversy.

20. Qur’an has too many scribes, middlemen and copyists; is incoherent, lacks uniformity, ambiguous. (improbability).
ANSWER: See Qur’an; Qur’an-abrogation & collecting.

21. Islam is warlike, conquering, militant.
As shown Islam allows only a defensive war. While there is no militancy in Islam, there is no passivity either: there are times to take the slap and times to take an eye in turn. Giving the cheek to incorrigible offenders is not wisdom; it is stupidity.

22. Whereas Allāh says there is no contradiction in the Qur’an (4:82) the Qur’an teems with contradictions.
ANSWER:  See Qur’an-abrogation & collecting.

23. Allāh has ninety-nine names; the hundredth will be revealed in the Hereafter.
Prophet Mohammad says Allāh has ninety-nine names–(Bokhari Vol. 3, #894; Vol.8 #419; Vol. 9, #489). While Allāh has ninety-names or Attributes He also has the crowning name “Allāh“ which would give God a hundred names.

“Allāh” is explained by Muhammad:
Allah, according to the most correct of the opinions respecting it, is a proper name applied to the Being Who exists necessarily by Himself, comprising all the attributes of perfection (T-LL), the al being inseparable from it, not derived (Msb-LL). Al-ilah is a different word, and Allah is not a contraction of al-ilah. The word Allah is not applied to any being except the only true God, and comprises all the excellent names, and the Arabs never gave the name Allah to any of their numerous idols. Hence, as being the proper name of the Divine Being and not having any equivalent in any other language”–(Comm. Qur’an chapter one).

24: Since Allāh is “Merciful” how is it He is also known by the names Al-Mudhil (the Humiliator, the Degrader);  Al-Mumit (the taker of Life, the Creator of Death); Al-Muntaqim (the Avenger; the Inflictor of Retribution); Al-Darr (the Punisher; Bringer of Harm to Those Who Offend Him).
-Al-Mudhil (the Humiliator, the Degrader). See Allāh humiliates & leads astray

-Al-Mumit (the taker of Life, the Creator of Death).
Allāh does not take life –Allāh does not take back what He gives. Allāh gives life and He gives death. Allāh created life and death as a trial, as to which of us is best in deeds–(Qur’an 67:2. See All people are Muslims). Even if Allāh “takes life,” He created it; it’s His to take or do with whatever He chooses.

-Al-Muntaqim (the Avenger; the Inflictor of Retribution).
(So you believe the arrogant butchers of the world and the mass murderers and other criminals, especially those who escaped human law, are not to be punished? Well, “atheism” can give them a free ride; “creationism” will collar the crimos and cook them).
To punish transgressors is not evil. In fact, such punishment is meant to reform transgressors. Allāh is not the least unjust to anyone–(Qur’an 41:46; 50:29). “And when We make people taste of mercy after an affliction touches them, lo! they devise plans against Our messages”–(Qur’an 10:21). (See Hell).
Parents who use corrective measures against a constantly transgressing child can hardly be charged as being evil. Like “Love,” “Mercy” also has a stern face.

-Al-Darr (the Punisher; Bringer of Harm to Those Who Offend Him).
While punishment is meted out to transgressors, Allāh does not bring “harm” to anyone. it is a mistake to think that Allāh Who is solicitous of the welfare of man would bring “harm to him”:

  • -“Say: To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth? Say: To Allāh He has ordained mercy on Himself”–(Qur’an 6:12, 54).
  • -“But if they give thee the lie, then say: Your Lord is the Lord of all-encompassing mercy; and His punishment cannot be averted from the guilty people”–(Qur’an 6:147).
  • -“Say: O My servants who have been prodigal regarding their souls, despair not of the mercy of Allah; surely Allāh forgives sins altogether. He is indeed the Forgiving, the Merciful’–(Qur’an 39:53. Imagine the Creator and Sustainer of all Who needs nothing from us, imagine the expanse of His mercy to address us in such noble compassionate terms).

And Prophet Mohammad informs us: “When Allāh completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, ‘My Mercy overpowers/precedes My Anger”–(Bokhari Vol. 4, # 416; Vol. 9, #501, 518, 545, 643. Muslim Vol. 4, #6626).

25. Muslim hanging women for committing adultery.
There is no death for adultery in Islam. Death for adultery and other sins is the Jewish and the Christian requirement, see  Islam-adultery & flogging

26. Muslims practiced slavery, Qur’an did nothing to suppress it.
Islam not only suppressed slavery, but requires that state funds be used to end this baneful institution (see Islam-slaves/slavery).

27. Prophet Mohammad’s Jihad shed innocent blood for Islam.
See Islam-Jihad & Jihad Watch; Mohammad-killed opponents

28. Mohammad and Muslims regularly slaughtered people; whereas Qur’an 5:32 states whoever slays one soul, it is as though he slew all men.
This verse is about the innocent soul.
Whether you are the transgressor or not, what would you do if someone comes to kill you? will you let him/her kill you? Mohammad was no transgressor, no occupier, no persecutor (see Mohammad-killed opponents).

29. Muslims proclaim themselves as chosen people (9:19: 3:110).
ANSWER: “Muslims” do not proclaim themselves as “chosen people;” Allāh has honored us with this distinction. Allāh revealed in His Qur’an: “You are the best nation raised up for men: you enjoin good and forbid evil and you believe in Allāh”–(Qur’an 3:110).

Muslims being the “chosen people” is not restricted to any race or color. This honor is not without responsibility as stated in the verse. We are the “chosen people” in that we are to enjoin good, forbid evil and because we believe in Allāh. And as there is no hypocrisy in Islam, in order to enjoin good we are to do good and as we are to forbid evil we are to avoid evil. If Muslims fail to uphold these lofty characteristics, we lose this excellence.

Regarding the third qualifier that Muslims is the “best nation,” which is, because Muslims “believe in Allāh.” While it may be argued that other religionists (and even atheists) also enjoin good and forbid evil, fact is only Muslims believe in Allāh.

Belief in Allāh means, as stated in Qur’an 112:1-4, that “He, Allah, is One. Allah, the Eternal, Absolute. He begets not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like Him” and incorporates belief in all His Angels, Books, Prophets; Resurrection of the dead and Day of Judgment; Heaven and Hell.

And while some religionists may be said to believe that God “is One, the Eternal, Absolute; who begets not, nor is He begotten; and there is none like Him” and also believe in the Resurrection of the dead and Day of Judgment; and Heaven and Hell. Only Muslims believe in all of God’s “Angels, Books, Prophets.”

(Notably, while Allāh requires Muslims to believe in all His Books, Allah also tells us what not to believe that are passing under the name of these Books/religions; such as TrinitySonship of God; inherited sin and vicarious atonement; Karma & Reincarnation; “chosen people” to the exclusion of others.

30. Islam rejects metaphysical, ontological, religious, and therefore political equality.
In the matter of “metaphysical, ontological” equality. While Islam teaches there are “metaphysical” beings –angels and jinns– Allāh invites man to reflect on the irrationality of polytheism. (See Polytheism and Monotheism).

In the matter of “religious” equality. As shown elsewhere, Allāh has given man the freedom of choice of belief.

In the matter of “political” equality. Whereas in politics the end justify any means; in Islam the end is only justified through truth and justice. And there is no system on the face of earth that is more equitable and just than Shari’ah.

31. Qur’anic law which forbids killing, and committing crimes is only so for Muslims. (Muslims can commit such acts against non-Muslims).
Allāh admonishes us in His Qur’an:

-“And wrong not men of their dues, and act not corruptly in the earth, making mischief”–(Qur’an 26:183).

-“O you who believe, be maintainers of justice, bearers of witness for Allāh, even though it be against your own selves or (your) parents or near relatives –whether he be rich or poor, Allāh has a better right over them both. So follow not (your) low desires, lest you deviate. And if you distort or turn away from (truth), surely Allāh is ever Aware of what you do”–(Qur’an 4:135).

-“O you who believe…. let not hatred of a people — because they hindered you from the Sacred Mosque — incite you to transgress. And help one another in righteousness and piety, and help not one another in sin and aggression”–(Qur’an 5:2).

-“O you who believe, be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice; and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably. Be just; that is nearer to observance of duty. And keep your duty to Allah. Surely Allah is Aware of what you do”–(Qur’an 5:8).
How then it is charged that “Qur’anic law which forbids killing, and committing crimes is only so for Muslims”? (For more see item #35).

32. Islam is fundamentally incompatible with modern progressive societies.
Islam extols democracy and progress while the world was yet running around with flint tools and torches. (See Islam & democracy).
As noted by Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din, the “Qur’an announced as follows:

(a) The whole world was full of potentialities, (52:4; 2:22)
(b) Everything in the universe was for a purpose, (3:190; 14:33)
(c) They all were for our service, use and benefit, (15:19-20)

(d) Not a single thing in the whole universe, however insignificant it might be, had been created without its proper use; they have been created to minister to us; and that everything we need is already provided, (3:190; 14:33)
(e) No labour is wasted, (29:58)

(f) Right actions would receive ample reward, 6:161; 7:170; 12:56; 18:30)
(g) Idleness should gain nothing, (94:7)
(h) Nothing in the universe is changeable in its nature, (30:30)

(i) The whole world is chained by the law. Everything in it follows certain laws, and we can turn everything in it to our advantage if we discover and use the said law. The laws of Nature are none other than the Will of the Most High, (3:82)
(j) The laws of Nature are unalterable, (17:77; 35:43)
(k) Knowledge and the discovery of new sciences will enable us to turn these things in Nature to our use, (2:31; 2:34; 96:5)

(l) Things in Nature stand in a complimentary relation to each other, (86:11-12)
(m) They combine with each other in a fixed proportion to create new things, (87:2-3)
(n) God’s blessings are open to all, (1:1)
(o) His ways are shown to him who seeks after them, (29:69)

(p) There are material treasures in the world for us to work upon. The word Rahman literally conveys this idea that they are open to all and ready to respond to our needs if properly approached, (1:1; 17:20; 67:3)
(q) Everything is already designed and comes to perfection under the principle of Evolution, (20:50)

(r) Man had not to create anything. Everything was already in existence. He had only to strive and use his limbs and he would have an ample reward, (53:39-40)
(s) Everything is for our good but its mishandling makes it evil, (4:79)
(t) Good or evil even in the least measure brings recompense, (7:8-9)

(u) No one will bear our burden, (17:15)
(v) The whole universe is in a measured order, and we have to observe it if we wish to invent other devices or things for our comfort, (15:21)
(w) There are limits and bounds for everything, their trespass entails loss,

(x) Human nature possesses the best of capabilities, but we need divine guidance for progress, (95:4)
(y) There are pitfalls in our ways, (95:5)
(z) True success only comes to him who exerts to excel others in his occupation of life, (79:1 to 5). (Introduction to the Study of the Holy Qur’an, pp. 15-19).

With such a guide before them, it was not surprising that early Muslims should have become keenly interested in scientific research.….They were the founders of a new civilization. Nay, further, they began to rule Nature, and through it, conquered the world. For centuries they continued supreme, but the riches they thus accumulated, subsequently made them slothful and wrought their ruin. Abuse, excess and self–indulgence shook the structure of their power to its foundations, leaving them an easy prey to others.

The early Muslims, however, bequeathed a vast heritage to their Western successors in the form of that learning which the latter have since pursued under the name of modern science.”
“Algebra, Statics, Conic Sections and other branches of applied mathematics are amongst Muslim discoveries.” (pp. 20-21).

“Muslims were admittedly the founders of modern culture. …It is also an admitted historical fact that there was nothing in pre-Islamic culture to inspire them for scientific research. The Qur’an came to advocate the acquisition of knowledge for the first time. The Holy Prophet bade his followers to go to far off countries in search of it.….In short, while St. Paul deprecated the law and called it a curse to humanity, the Qur’an respected it and made the observance of it our religion, as Islam literally means “Obedience to the Law.”…..The formal Church had also to assert that sin was innate in human nature, since sin is a breach of the Law. The dictum that man is sinful by nature involves an assumption that he is incapable of observing the Law. It is a most despicable libel on our character to assert that we are criminal by nature. If sin is innate in our nature, it is an anomaly if legislation exists in Christian land. Parliament and all other legislative bodies are a mere infringement on our liberty. …..It was this principle, no doubt, that for centuries retarded all material progress in Christendom, which began to move forward only when the Church dogmas had lost their hold on the human mind.
It can only be gross ignorance of facts or bigotry to charge that “Islam is fundamentally incompatible with modern progressive societies.”

33. Muslims divide the world in two –friends and enemies –Dar al-Islam against dar al-harb.
Muslims may do so but Islam does not! (Arguably, all religionists divide the world in two –those of their own faith and those outside of their faith).

As shown in item #35, Allāh/Islam gives people freedom of conscience and requires good relations with those who do not transgress against us (likewise, we are not allowed to transgress against others).

“Allåh forbids you not respecting those who fight you not for religion, nor drive you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly. Surely Allåh loves the doers of justice”–(Qur’an 60:8). And Muhammad Ali comments:

“This verse and the one that follows –(“Allåh forbids you only respecting those who fight you for religion, and drive you forth from your homes and help (others) in your expulsion, that you make friends of them; and whoever makes friends of them, these are the wrongdoers”)–., revealed as they were at a time when the relations between the Muslims and the disbelievers were most strained on account of the existence of a continual state of war between the two parties, settle conclusively that friendly relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, as such, are not prohibited. It is in the light of these verses that all the verses forbidding friendly relations with the disbelievers should be read, because here the true principle is revealed in unmistakable language, allowing friendly relations with one class of disbelievers and prohibiting such relations with those of another class.”

34. Dhimmis.
ANSWER: See Bat Yeor-Muslims, criticism of “Israel”

35. Muslim wants to rule the planet; Qur’anic law will take us backwards.
If Muslims want to rule the planet we will be doing the planet an invaluable service. As there is no system on the face of earth that is more equitable and just than Shari’ah.
However Muslims duty is not to rule anyone, only to deliver the Divine Message of the Qur’an.

That “Qur’anic law will take us backwards”:
-the Qur’an which teaches dealing justly (Qur’an 2:279, 5:8); not to rob men their dues (26:183); to give justice even if it be against one’s self, parents, kins, or whether he be poor or rich (4:135; 4:58; 5:8), encourages feeding the needy and the poor, free the captives, help those in debt, care for the orphans, the wayfarer, and to free slaves (9:60, 2:177), not to act corruptly in the earth or make mischief (26:183); not to transgress, or aid in sin and aggression (2:190; 5:2), to restrain anger and forgive (3:133), to fight on behalf of the oppressed (4:75); because Allāh loves the  just, and because He commands justice and the doing of good, and forbids injustice (60:8, 16:90)–could not “take us backwards”.

-the Qur’an which liberates woman–(2:187; 4:19-22); exalts her–(4:1; 9:71-72); gives her equality with man in financial, property, moral and spiritual matters–(4:32, 7-10, 176-177; 3:195; 33:35; 4:124; 16:97; 43:70); honors her–(4:1); made her a garment to man and he is her garment–(2:187); given her rights similar to those against her–(2:228);  made her a protector of man as he is her protector–(9:71); and established her as a source of peace,  comfort, love and compassion–(7:189; 30: 21)–could not “take us backwards”.

-the Qur’an which teaches that all men are created equal (Qur’an 95:4), we are made into different tribes and nations that we may know one another (49:13), we are to be judged not by our race, color or nationality but by our deeds (6:133), the noblest ones are those who are righteous (49:13, 98:7), to return evil with that which is better–(23:96), because Allāh God loves the just, and because Allāh is aware of what you do (5:45, 4:135)–could not “take us backwards”.

36. Islam engenders sexual discrimination, imprisonment of outsiders.
-that Islam engenders sexual discrimination. As shown in items #3 and #7 this claim is preposterous.

-Imprisonment of outsiders. If they are guilty of a crime, certainly.
Don’t non-Islamic governments do the same? In fact some government(s) even imprison people (Muslims) on mere “suspicion” and/or even without charge. And even fly to the other side of the world to kill such suspects.

37.Islamic fascism.
Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary defines fascism as: 1: ”the body of principles held by Fascisti 2:a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and race and stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcibly suppression of opposition.”

Islam requires power be given to those suited for the position and to exercise justice–(Qur’an 4:58, 135; 5:8); to govern by consultation–(3:158; 42:38); ensures freedom and tolerance–(2:256; 8:39; 10:99; 18:29; 50:45; 109:1-6); gives man equality in human endeavors and extols righteousness as the sole criterion of greatness–(18:110; 49:13); Where is the “Fascist state”? (For more on this see Ayaan Hirsi Ali & Islam, item #2).

38. No direct relationship with God in Islam.
On the contrary, in Islam there is no mediator between man and God. Muslims are required to relate directly to Allāh:

-“And when My servants ask thee concerning Me, surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should hear My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way”–(Qur’an 2:186. Notably, Allah’s answering our prayers does not necessarily mean a “Yes”–granting our requests. His answer may also be a “No”–withholding from our expectations. Allāh, the All-knowing God knows what is best for us. Perhaps there are individuals who were disappointed in not getting what they prayed for, but were subsequently joyed that they did not receive it.)

-“And your Lord says: Pray to Me, I will answer you”–(Qur’an 40:60). And Prophet’s Hadith indicates that one is to only call directly to Allāh–(Bokhari Vol. 4, #671).

While man needs teacher(s) to assist in his edification he does not need any sheikh, guru, or saint to link him to God.
“And those whom you call upon besides Him (Allah) Are not able to help you, nor can they help themselves.” “And those whom they call on besides Allāh Created naught, while they are themselves created. Dead (are they), not living. And they know not when they will be raised”–(Qur’an 7:197; 16:20-21).

Of all human beings, the closest ones to God are His prophets. Even these highest of human beings prayed to Allah God and sought his help. No one, whether a man or woman, be he prophet, saint, priest, or other, who since in their lifetime could not help themselves and pray to and seek the help of God, cannot, in their death answer the prayers of others or render help.

Muslims who seek the aid of saints do so of their own free will. They have no assent from Islam.
“Allāh is He Who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six periods, and He is established on the Throne of Power. You have not besides Him a guardian or an intercessor. Will you not then mind?–(Qur’an 32:4)

39. Polygamy; “denial of existential reality to all non-Muslims;” killing of infidels.
Polygamy and indiscriminate killing of “infidels” already dealt with.
That Islam denies the “existential reality to all non-Muslims.” The Qur’an belies such a claim. In fact, under Islamic rule non-Muslims are allowed to govern by their own religious law.

40. Many surahs hostile to comfortable living.
While Islam admonishes against excessiveness and hoarding of wealth there is no hostility to comfortable living in Islam. See item #7.

41. One who accepts Islam is obligated to adhere to its teachings.
ANSWER: Isn’t one who accepts French or American or British or Canadian citizenship “obligated to adhere” to its laws?
Isn’t one who joins the police force or any organization “obligated to adhere” to its laws?
Isn’t one who becomes a Jew or Christian “obligated to adhere to its teachings”?

42. Whereas European Enlightenment condemns superstition; rejects intolerance; abolish censorship, resists tyranny, opposes political absolutism, end state religion, proscription of magical thinking, extension of freedom of thought and expression, promulgation of equal rights. The Qur’an is opposed to all of them.
Islam uprooted superstition–(Bokahri Vol. 4, #423, 437;  Vol. 6 #51;  Vol. 7 #653 Cf. The word ‘Hama’).
As noted in items 14 and 35 there is no intolerance and censorship, tyranny and oppression in Islam. (See also Islam-intolerance). And that Islam gives freedom of thought and expression; and equal rights.

Regarding “proscription.” While Islam does not require the publishing of the name of someone condemned to death and the confiscation of his property, if the atheist was referring to the fact that Islam prohibits/condemns certain things; many societies also prohibit/condemn certain things, e.g. hallucinatory drugs, prostitution, common bawdy house.
And if the atheist meant that women movements were restricted (see Women-movements restricted).

Regarding “political absolutism” and “state religion.” As noted above there is “politics” –where the end is justified by any means – in Islam. As no system can be shown to more equitable and just than Shari’ah; and as Islamic rulers are obligated to govern by Shari’ah; there is no need for any opposition –each sector of society is justly represented.
(In non-Islamic systems one can regularly hear the bewailing that all we do is replace one crook with another).

43. Islam condemns luxury, homosexuality, gambling, drugs, nightclubs, alcohol, prostitution, cinema, perfume, lotteries.
-Islam condemns luxury, (see item #7)
-Islam condemns homosexuality, (see Islam-homosexuals & lesbians)
-Islam condemns gambling, (see Alcohol & gambling)
-Islam condemns drugs. Even human governments and non-Muslim parents and even young people condemn drugs.
Do you take things (or encourage your children, if you have, to take things) that interferes with your (their) thinking/reasoning?

-Islam condemns nightclubs. Many non-Muslims also condemn nightclubs. Nightclubs can be a nucleus for vice/crime –rape; drunkenness (for an account of what can happen to young women under the influence of alcohol see Alcohol & gambling)

-Islam condemns alcohol, (see Alcohol & gambling)
-Islam condemns prostitution (see Allāh and prostitution); and Prophet Mohammad “regarded illegal the price of a dog (likely from studding), the earnings of a prostitute, and the charges taken by a sooth-sayer (fortuneteller)”–(Bokhari Vol. 3, #482).

-Islam condemns cinema. This depends on what is being shown.
-Islam condemns perfume. Whereas the Prophet disapproved of one being perfumed with saffron (probably because of its strong scent) and ordered that a person performing Hajj be free of perfume, and to not perfume the dead, the Prophet Mohammad encouraged the use of sweet scents–(Bokhari Vol.1, #258; Vol. 2, #5, 8; Abu Dawud Vol. 1, #343). And ‘Aisha says she used to perfume the Prophet–(Bokhari Vol. 7, #805; 806, 812; 814).

-Islam condemns lotteries. Lottery is gambling; which has the potential of causing ‘addiction” which can lead to other crime(s) to support the habit. And can also deprive a family of much-needed finance (see Alcohol & gambling).

44. Mohammad compared to Nietzsche.
(The Internet). Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900) “was a German philosophercultural critic, poet, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history.”
Mohammad was Divine Messenger who brought the world to our feet and eternity to our arms.

45. Belief in the Afterlife deprives us of the enjoyments and benefits of the present life.
